James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

Alasdair and Trish Sutherland purchased their 33 year old vineyard (formerly Dawson Estate) in 1995. Alasdair, a Hunter Valley veteran of more than 30 years, had a Scottish heritage and this is reflected in the name ‘Capercaillie’. It is a Gaelic name given to the rare and majestic black woodlands grouse, native to the pine forests found scattered through parts of Scotland.
